SACRAMENTO, Calif — A slight cooling trend will take shape for the end of the week and weekend. Highs will still be about five degrees above average but no extreme heat is expected in the short term forecast.

The recent warm temperatures have increased snowmelt. This is leading to high, fast and very cold river water flows. Spring is the time of year where waterways are very dangerous. A key point to keep in mind if heading out near any natural body of water.

Low elevation fuels are also starting to dry quickly with the low humidity and above average temperatures. Even though temperatures are cooling, peak fire season is approaching. This year will once again feature abundant fuel due to the average to slightly above average rainfall we saw over the winter.

Simple items like being mindful to properly dispose of cigarettes and matches, not driving on grass and making sure tow chains are secured tightly can help prevent a spark. With the unofficial start of summer just around the corner, it's also a good idea to keep in mind barbeque safety. That may include being extra watchful of flames on breezy days and making sure to be careful when disposing hot coals.

The cooling trend that is underway looks like it will hold through Memorial Day with highs in the 80s.
